Character: Vincent Valentine
Series: Final Fantasy VII
Character background: Vincent Valentine dwells in a sea of his own regret and past experiences. Formerly a member of the Turks, an elite assassination group working under the command of Shinra, he became entangled with one of the company's top scientists, Lucrecia Crescent, after being assigned to oversee a project currently run by his father. Time led to a series of incidents that severed these ties and, until some time later, Vincent did not see Lucrecia.... That is, until the Jenova Project was started.

Vincent himself was again assigned to oversee this project and assure the safety of it's scientists, but Lucrecia hadn't forgotten the death of Vincent's father that had led to their separation and she began a relationship with Hojo, effectively beginning the life-cycle of Jenova's destruction. Vincent was adamantly against the experimentations on Lucrecia's unborn child and, when confronting Hojo, was shot at point blank. Lucrecia was devastated, still very much in love with the man she'd kept at distance, and began about reviving him behind Hojo's back during the man's own expermentation. Vincent was then injected with stagnant mako, or G-Substance, and became the host for a beast named Chaos. The creature sent Vincent out of control and it was only after Lucrecia managed to place ProtoMateria into his body that he calmed. Vincent, however, never forgave himself for his sins of being unable to stop the formation of Sephiroth and Jenova and Lucrecia's descent into madness and quickly placed himself in a catatonic state for nearly thirty years, sleeping in a coffin beneath Shinra mansion. He only awoke at the discovery of him by Cloud Strife's group and then aided them in the defeat of Sephiroth.

Vincent remains at distance, even now, to his small band of friends. He has never quite given up the feelings he holds against what he calls his 'sin' and places the grudge against himself endlessly, visiting Lucrecia when he can in her small, crystal prison. He's usually quite reserved when it comes to conversation, but is an excellent fighter and gunman, and spares words only when seeing them important. He is not a impeccable shell, however -- if one were to try hard enough, they might be able to view his softer side... but Vincent, in general, keeps all at arm's length. He often struggles to control the beast inside him, using Chaos only in the most dire of circumstances, but not all aspects of this mutation are always controlled. For the most part, Vincent has a very loyal heart and will protect those he deems important to the most of his abilities, but that doesn't mean he always sticks around afterward.

Prior to the game, Vincent was on his way to again visit Lucrecia when a sudden strange feeling overtook him and he was plopped (rather unceremoniously) unconscious on the sands of a mysterious island.

Character is set pre-Dirge of Cerberus.
